Book Group - Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín

Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín was requested by one of the group as it had won the 2009 Costa Novel Award and was also longlisted for the 2009 Man Booker Prize. It was also part of our quest to spend less on new books, and we picked up about four copies to share from my mum's Oxfam Book Shop (she will often collect a title for me!).

There isn't too much out there in terms of book club/ group guides but, there is however, a great guide from the publisher Simon & Schuster. It gives some great tips for running a reading group on the book, and we relied on it heavily on the night we discussed it. There's also a great Guardian Book Club article.
The group were split in opinion - half loved it and half hated it - I always love it when that happens as it makes for a great discussion.

Apart from the guide we talked about:
  • the narration
  • Ireland (two of the group are from there)
  • New York
  • expectations of women
Have you read this book for your book club? What did you think? We'd love to know!
